Job Detail
Working within technical services, you’ll convert incoming print and digital materials into high-quality, searchable library records. Daily tasks include cataloguing and classification, authority control, and preparing items for circulation. You’ll maintain consistency across MARC fields, subject headings, and series statements; check for duplicates; and coordinate with acquisitions to resolve ISBN/edition discrepancies. The role also supports shelf-ready logistics: printing labels, affixing barcodes/RFID, stamping, and ensuring every item is traceable. When needed, you’ll assist at the public desk—answering basic queries, guiding users to resources, and escalating complex research questions to the reference team. Quality, speed, and accuracy are the core performance indicators.
Eligibility Criteria
- Education: Bachelor in Library Science (BLS) from a recognized institution.
- Experience: 3 years’ relevant experience in an academic or research library plus a 1-year computer course.
- Residence: Candidates residing in Rawalpindi and surrounding areas will be preferred.
- Documentation: All academic achievements and experience certificates must be attested as per FUI instructions.
Key Responsibilities
- Cataloguing & Classification: Create and edit records (e.g., MARC) using recognized standards (e.g., DDC/LC) and controlled vocabularies.
- Metadata Quality: Apply consistent headings, call numbers, and subject terms; enforce authority control; resolve duplicates and errors.
- Shelf-Readiness: Prepare items for circulation—labels, barcodes/RFID, stamping, jackets—and update item status in the ILS/OPAC.
- Collection Maintenance: Support weeding, relocation, and reclassification projects; collaborate with acquisitions on new titles and subscriptions.
- User Support: Provide courteous guidance at the counter; refer advanced research questions to reference librarians.
- Reporting: Maintain logs of daily output, error corrections, and backlog reduction; flag system issues for timely resolution.
- Compliance: Follow library SOPs for handling, privacy, and record integrity; contribute to audits and inventory checks.
Skills & Attributes
- Proficiency with integrated library systems (ILS) / OPAC and standard cataloguing tools.
- Working knowledge of MARC, DDC/LC, ISBN/ISSN, and authority files.
