Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems provide non-verbal and minimally verbal autistic children with the tools to express thoughts, needs, and desires. The AAC Specialist evaluates communication capabilities and implements high-tech and low-tech communication systems.
Core Responsibilities & Work Functions
The daily operational scope and functional deliverables for this role include:
- Assess receptive and expressive communication abilities of non-verbal and minimally verbal autistic students.
- Implement Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS), communication boards, and eye-gaze communication devices.
- Configure and train students on dedicated speech-generating tablets and AAC software applications.
- Train parents, teachers, and speech assistants on reinforcing AAC system usage across daily routines.
- Track functional communication milestones and expand vocabulary repositories within assistive devices.
