A high-level Pakistani diplomatic and security delegation participated in the eighth meeting of the Moscow Format Consultations on Afghanistan convened in the Russian capital on Monday, October 5. The multilateral platform brought together key regional stakeholders, including host nation Russia, China, Iran, Pakistan, India, and Central Asian republics, to deliberate on pressing geopolitical developments, humanitarian conditions, and regional counter-terrorism imperatives.
The Pakistani delegation was led by Ambassador Mohammad Sadiq, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister and Pakistan's Special Representative for Afghanistan. The delegation also included Pakistan's Ambassador to Afghanistan Obaid-ur-Rehman Nizamani, Ambassador to the Russian Federation Faisal Niaz Tirmizi, and Director General of the Afghanistan Desk at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Naeem Iqbal Cheema.
High-Stakes Deliberations on Regional Security and Militancy
The 8th Moscow Format talks come at a critical juncture marked by persistent security friction and cross-border incidents along the Durand Line. Pakistani representatives reiterated Islamabad's firm stance that regional peace and commercial connectivity remain fundamentally contingent on verifiable steps by the interim Afghan administration to prevent foreign terrorist organizations, particularly the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (Fitna al-Khawarij), from utilizing Afghan territory as a launching pad for armed incursions.
Ambassador Mohammad Sadiq articulated Pakistan's perspective during the closed-door plenary sessions, highlighting that sustainable regional integration through trans-regional transport infrastructure, such as the Trans-Afghan Railway and regional energy corridors, requires unyielding collective commitments against cross-border armed extremism. The Pakistani delegation emphasized that peace within Afghanistan directly impacts stability throughout South and Central Asia.
Multilateral Consensus and Diplomatic Engagement
Diplomatic sources confirmed that participating regional envoys held extensive consultations reviewing the political situation in Kabul, human rights benchmarks, governance inclusivity, and economic rehabilitation. The forum underscored that regional cooperation remains the most viable pathway toward durable stability in the post-conflict state.
On the sidelines of the plenary sessions, the Pakistani delegation held bilateral consultative meetings with Russian, Chinese, and Central Asian counterparts to align security perceptions and explore collaborative mechanisms for border surveillance, narcotics interdiction, and structured humanitarian assistance.
