A Russian jet-powered attack drone struck the historic central building of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in downtown Kyiv on Monday, triggering massive fires, causing severe structural destruction, and killing at least two individuals in one of the most direct strikes on Ukraine's scientific heritage since the war began.

The daytime strike on the 19th-century academic complex in Kyiv's central Shevchenkivskyi district injured several prominent scholars and staff members, including Volodymyr Horbulin, the veteran former Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine. Authorities confirmed that Horbulin was hospitalized with shrapnel injuries, while his longtime research assistant was killed inside the facility.

Emergency evacuations and clinic damage

Emergency rescue crews from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine arrived on the scene within minutes as thick black smoke billowed across central Kyiv. Video footage and eyewitness accounts showed academic staff and researchers escaping through shattered ground-floor windows and emergency exits as heavy flames engulfed upper lecture halls, archival libraries, and research laboratories.

A secondary wave of drone debris and blast shockwaves also struck the nearby Dobrobut medical clinic, blowing out multi-story glass facades and forcing medical staff to evacuate patients into underground shelters. Ukrainian air defense forces reported that Russian military units deployed an intensified barrage of high-speed jet-propelled Shahed-type drones designed to penetrate urban air defense cordons at low altitudes.

Poland scrambles fighter jets along NATO frontier

The intense aerial assault on western and central Ukrainian targets prompted the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command to immediately scramble frontline fighter jets and activate ground-based radar tracking systems across eastern Poland.

The Polish Government Centre for Security issued a precautionary alert across the Lublin border region, placing air defense interceptors on high alert. Polish defense officials later confirmed that all scrambled aircraft returned safely to base and that no unauthorized violation of sovereign NATO airspace occurred during the Ukrainian defensive engagement.

Ukrainian leadership condemns cultural and scientific targeting

Ukrainian government officials and international academic bodies condemned the strike as a deliberate attack on civilian scientific infrastructure. Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal stated that targeting academic research centers and medical clinics demonstrates a complete disregard for international humanitarian conventions.

Search and rescue operations in Kyiv concluded late Monday after fire crews contained the multi-alarm blaze, while structural engineers began emergency stabilizing work on the historic building to prevent further collapse of its heritage facades.
