Ukrainian air defense forces intercepted or electronically suppressed 134 out of 173 strike and decoy uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) launched by Russian forces in an expansive overnight bombardment, the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced on Sunday, September 27, 2026.

The intense aerial operation represented one of the largest single-night drone salvos recorded across the conflict, triggering air raid alerts across 14 administrative regions and engaging surface-to-air missile units, fighter aviation, mobile anti-aircraft teams, and specialized electronic warfare batteries for over eight hours.

Multi-vector launch tactics and advanced drone variants

According to flight tracking and radar telemetry released by the Ukrainian General Staff, Russian forces launched the 173 drones from seven distinct staging areas. Launch vectors included Oryol, Kursk, Millerovo, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, and Shatalovo within the Russian Federation, alongside occupied positions in Donetsk and Hvardiiske in the Crimean peninsula.

Military analysts observed a tactical evolution in the composition of the aerial barrage. More than 50 of the deployed Shahed-type drones were high-speed, jet-powered variants designed to outpace low-altitude mobile gun squads. These strike assets were mixed with smaller Gerbera and Parodiya decoy drones lacking explosive warheads, specifically intended to clutter radar displays and deplete Ukrainian interceptor missile stockpiles.

Interception outcomes and infrastructure impact

Ukrainian air defense units achieved an interception efficiency of nearly 78 percent, destroying 134 drones before they could strike designated targets. However, Ukrainian emergency services confirmed that impacts were recorded at 19 infrastructure locations, while falling wreckage from downed drones caused damage at eight additional sites across Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Sumy oblasts.

In Kyiv, falling debris ignited fires at commercial warehouse facilities and damaged local electrical distribution transformers, prompting municipal energy crews to reroute power grids to prevent widespread residential blackouts. First responders worked through the early morning hours to contain blazes and clear unexploded ordnance from suburban roadways.

Urgent appeals for air defense ammunition

Ukrainian military officials renewed urgent appeals to Western allies for additional air defense equipment, specifically requesting more medium-range missile systems, automated acoustic drone tracking networks, and vehicle-mounted electronic jamming systems. Command officials stressed that continuous nocturnal saturation attacks are intended to degrade Ukrainian logistics and industrial hubs ahead of the upcoming winter season.

Emergency response headquarters confirmed that round-the-clock restoration efforts remain active across affected electrical and municipal networks, while air defense forces remain on high alert for follow-up salvos.
