OpenAI introduced GPT-6.1 Sol on September 29, 2026, positioning the model as a lower-cost option for complex coding, computer-use and professional tasks. The company says it approaches the performance of its flagship GPT-6 Astra on several evaluations while charging one-fifth as much for standard input and output tokens.
What changed?
GPT-6.1 Sol is an upgrade to GPT-6 Sol. In OpenAI's published evaluations, the new model improved on software engineering, multi-step business workflows and computer-use tasks. These are company-reported benchmark results; performance in a particular application will depend on its prompts, tools and workload.
For developers, standard API pricing is $2 per million input tokens, $0.10 per million cached input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. Cached input is useful for applications that repeatedly send the same instructions or reference material. OpenAI's model documentation lists a 1.05 million-token context window and support for text and image inputs.
Availability and safety
OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol is available in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users, and through the API under the model name gpt-6.1-sol. The company says it is not yet available in Chat. Access may vary by plan and workspace settings.
In a separate system card addendum, OpenAI classifies GPT-6.1 Sol at its “Critical” cybersecurity capability level and says it applies the same safeguard stack used for GPT-6 Astra. The classification describes the model's potential capabilities under OpenAI's framework, not a claim that every user can access those capabilities.
For IT teams considering the new model, the practical next step is to compare it with existing models on their own coding, document and automation tasks, weighing answer quality, latency and total cost.
