UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Islamabad on Tuesday, October 6, for an official Pakistan visit scheduled to run through October 8, with meetings involving the country's leadership and engagements on international security and disaster preparedness.
Radio Pakistan confirmed his arrival and said Acting Foreign Secretary Ambassador Nabeel Munir received him. The visit follows an invitation from Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, according to the Foreign Office's announcement issued on October 5.
Leadership meetings on the agenda
The Foreign Office said the programme includes meetings with the president, prime minister, deputy prime minister and foreign minister, and the chief of defence forces and chief of army staff. Geo News identified the leaders on the scheduled programme as President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Dar and Field Marshal Asim Munir.
The meetings are scheduled engagements. The arrival announcements reviewed for this report did not set out their outcomes or announce any new agreement.
Pakistan's Foreign Office said the visit would provide an opportunity to discuss regional and international developments and reaffirm the country's cooperation with the United Nations. It described multilateral diplomacy and international peace and security as themes of the programme.
Disaster preparedness and UN observers
Guterres is also scheduled to visit the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan, known as UNMOGIP, and attend a briefing at Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority.
The UN's deputy spokesperson, Farhan Haq, said in the October 5 noon briefing that the NDMA engagement would allow the secretary-general to assess Pakistan's progress in preparedness and resilience since the devastating 2022 floods. The same briefing recalled Guterres's previous Pakistan visit in 2022, when he travelled to flood-affected regions.
The Foreign Office's programme also highlights early warning and disaster preparedness. The announced itinerary does not specify a new aid package or funding commitment; those should not be inferred from the visit itself.
The confirmed development on October 6 is Guterres's arrival. The official October 5 announcement establishes the October 6-8 visit dates, while the leadership meetings and institutional briefings remain scheduled activities in the sources reviewed.
